A Guide To London's Best Rehearsal Studios

A Guide To London's Best Rehearsal Studios

london's best rehearsal studios

London is without a doubt the place-to-be for a budding musician but it can often be quite daunting finding the perfect place to record or rehearse. Over the years we've worked in a number of music rehearsal studios filming live music sessions for Reload with a variety of musicians, bands & singer songwriters and we know a good space when we find one. It's not too difficult to find low-cost practice rooms around London but it's often the case you get what you pay for which can be quite an off-putting and not the best environment to film in let alone focus on your music as they're often not soundproofed.

We've compiled a list of some of our favourite music studios in London covering all areas - north, west, east and south. Keep in mind these won't be higher top-end studios which are likely to be very expensive and hit your pocket hard. The list we've compiled features music studios which offer competitive rates, backline, equipment hire and more often than not offer additional services & technical support if needed. We've included all the information you might need for each studio from their contact information to their lockout rates and from the size of their space to their opening hours. The list only features spaces which are large enough to fit a 5 piece band (which are often great for dancers and theatre groups) - we've avoided listing smaller spaces.

Use the map below to find a studio in London.

Resident Studios - NW2

Resident Studios is a keen favourite on Reload Sessions, mostly because it's handy for those based in North West London and is away from the hustle and bustle of a high street - this however can be a double edged sword depending on how you look at it. The flexibility with booking is great at Resident Studios as you're able to book smaller sessions in early mornings or late evenings and we're very fond of their main space.

Pros

High ceilings. Window to control room. Grand piano available at extra cost. Fully soundproofed. Mirrored wall. Visually pleasing space. Black curtains make a good back drop for filming.

Cons

Not ideal for those with bulky equipment who are travelling on public transport as the station is 10 minutes away.

Bush Studios - W12

Although we have never filmed in Bush Studios, we often hear good things about their space. We've gathered information on one of their larger rooms (but not the largest which is ideal for larger groups, choirs etc), Studio 4. The room is spacey and seems to be ideal for a larger band if need be.

Pros

Free parking. Near to shops. Easily reached by tube or bus. Large space. Mirrored wall. Fully soundproofed.

Cons

Minimum session length isn't ideal for shorter sessions/rehearsals.

Rogue Studios - SE16

We have filmed in Rogue Studios a few times, and though it's not our favourite on the list, it is still a good option for musicians based in South London. Though this studio (Room 1) might not be ideal for video production the online booking system is a breath of fresh air as it saves time calling up back and forth to lock in dates with your band. If you're used to gritty studios and on a budget Rogue Studios would be a good fit. There are a few nice touches, but the studio doesn't make itself out to be more than it is - a standard rehearsal space for bands and musicians. It may not be the prettiest but as it's the cheapest on this list you can't really complain.

Pros

Online booking system. Discount available online. Mirrored wall. Stage lights.

Cons

Quite isolated. Reminds us of lower budget studios.

Premises Studios E2

Premises Studios is a good shout for musicians based in East London. We've taken their medium sized studio - Studio 3 for this list though there are larger studios available. The staging space in Premises Studios is interesting as it allows a specific space for a band as well as a space for down-time, this could make it ideal for a showcase too. Premises boasts the first solar-powered professional recording studio in Europe which will no doubt get a nod of approval from eco-friendly musicians. The studios also run an adjoining cafe - perfect for those lockout days where you need to grab something to eat but not wander too far from the studios. We're also very impressed with their membership add-on which offers discounts of up to 20% around the studio and cafe. Whenever we visit Premises Studios we get the feeling that they're set up to get the best from their clients so that they can get straight to work.

Pros

Adjoining cafe. Membership offers. Ideal for showcases or larger bands. Easy to find. Long opening hours.

Cons

The space (Studio 3) isn't visually compelling. It can sometimes feel grotty and as if you're in a school.

The Joint - WC1X

The Joint is a well-rounded studio in central London. The rooms are well kept and have iconic backgrounds which are instantly recognisable. The team at The Joint has taken the time to create a space which works well for their clients and distanced themselves from dark and grungy rehearsal rooms that can often give rehearsal spaces a bad rap. Though their pricing and what is included is initially confusing it shouldn't be enough to put you off visiting. We've used the Yellow Studio in the past and we're confident it'll suit you and your band's needs (if you're a standard 5-6 piece).

Pros

The space looks clean and well kept. Mid-grand piano available at additional cost. Storage options. On-site spares shop. Handy lift/elevator.

Cons

Pricing is confusing - rates are given per session for some studios and per hour for others without VAT. Parking can be tricky.
